Building a Jedi
— Jedi are like snowflakes; no two Jedi dress exactly alike. —
A lot of first time costumers start with a Jedi costume because they think it is easy, and that is partially true. There are a lot of vendors online, but please do a little research all costumes need research even if it is your own generic Jedi: fabric, color, style all things needs to be though through and not least approvable.
The Jedi costume is build up of layers, starting from the inside and working my way out they are: Undertunic, Outertunic, Tabards, (sometimes additional Tabards of leather), an Obi/Sash and then the Robe. Then of course we have the boots, pants and belt. These are the components of the Jedi outfit.
I’ll start of with color. There are many different Jedi seen on screen, in the movies, comics, TV-series and games and all have different color schemes. The colors seen in the comics seem to be more vibrant and louder. But still many Jedi choose earth tone colors as their primary color on their tunic. Many of the face character Jedi from the Prequel films have tabards and obis the same fabric (and color) as the outer tunic. The inner tunics are often a different color…as are the pants.
I think it is fine to mix and match colors between the inner tunic, outer tunic, tabards and obi. However, care must be taken to make sure the colors have:
- Harmony
A color scheme based on analogous colors:
Analogous colors are any three colors which are side by side on a 12 part color wheel, such as yellow-green, yellow, and yellow-orange. Usually one of the three colors predominates.
A color scheme based on complementary colors:
Complementary colors are any two colors which are directly opposite each other, such as red and green and red-purple and yellow-green. These opposing colors create maximum contrast and maximum stability.
A color scheme based on nature:
Nature provides a perfect departure point for color harmony. Take a look outside your window for inspiration for your Jedi.
Here is what, the RL standard says about colors for a Jedi:
Earth tone colors, preferably shades of brown, gray, black and white. Other earth tones are allowed (greens, blues, yellows, violets and reds (where the reds are darker and in the burgundy family), but should be muted. No bright or loud (sharp) colors are allowed (examples would include: red, pink, neon green, etc.). Combinations of red and black are not allowed, as they are considered Sith colors. Colors of the Generic Jedi costume may be mixed and matched (except for the belt and boots). Legion Costume Judges are the final authority on color. If in doubt, contact a Legion Costume Judge for an opinion on proposed color combinations before construction.
Here is a great list of earth toned color combinations:
I have created a simple Jedi for you to play around with colors, here are some of my suggestions based on the color table:
2 colors:
3 colors:
4 colors:
If you want to try yourself here is a link to a blank one for you to either print out or color on your pc.
