Once you've figured out your color design, it's time to choose your fabric.
One of the most prevalent questions we are asked in the Jedi forums is in regards to fabrics: what kind to use.
First of all, I would say that the higher quality Jedi costumes that you see are those where the costumer has paid close attention to the details. Having the right color, texture, thickness and drape of fabric is key in making an incredible Jedi costume.
If you study the films, you see that the Jedi costumes, especially those in the Prequel films, look rich, have a “thick” look to them and they all have an obvious texture.
What kind of fabric should you use?
The Jedi are in harmony with the earth and with each other as an Order, there for the natural choice would be natural fabrics.
In the more expensive end we have the silks, many of the tunics in the new trilogy is made from either silk or cotton.
the important thing to note about the silk is, you shouldn't use the glossy side. Not many Jedi shine.
A lot of the Jedi costumes were made out of a material called Indian Homespun or Khadi. It is a light woven fabric like Ghandi wore. It is hand woven in a variety of different patterns and shade of white to tan. That is why so many Jedi tunics were different shades. They also dyed the same fabric black for the Sith robes.
Khadi and other natural fabric shrink a lot so be sure to order plenty.
Not all fabrics are particularly thick either, but can that can be helped. If you line your fabric you can get the same result perhaps even better than if you put a double layer in your tunic.
